Salem, Massachusetts is a town in Salem County, New York, United States. The population was 8,605 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Rochester, New York Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European settlers in what is now Salem were Dutch colonists who arrived in 1636 and named the area "New Netherland." The first permanent English settlers were British soldiers who arrived in 1651 as part of General Monmouth's expedition against the French and their Indian allies. The English name for the town was "Salem." For centuries Salem has been known as one of America's most traditonal and history-rich communities. In 1792, during the American Revolutionary War, rebels from Salem took up arms and helped lead an unsuccessful attack on Boston Harbor that ultimately led to the Battle of Bunker Hill. In 1814–1815, during the Mexican-American War (1846–1847), Salem participated in several skirmishes along with other towns around Central Mexico City before eventually falling to Mexican forces under General José Joaquín Carrera y Herrera. In 1851–1852 when Albany was being developed as a new capital of New York State, plans called for building a canal through western New York which would include a stop at Salem. However due to opposition by residents fearing heights above ground level on either side of the canal and because there were no available land suitable for such a project within town limits, it never happened; however some evidence suggests that diversionary culverts still exist near today's downtown core which may have contributed indirectly to this story. A few years later another proposal arose to connect Albany with Buffalo via what is now Utica Avenue by building an expressway parallel to Mohawk Creek bedding eastward from Albany towards Syracuse then northwards towards Rochester; but again because there had not yet been any appropriation or development for this proposed highway(s) it never came about either! It should be noted that even though these two proposals never came true – they did inspire future developers like developer Saul Bellow & Partners LLP who purchased land adjacent to Mohawk Creekbed between Utica Ave./Rochester Rd./Route 11/Utica Park Blvd./Lake Erie Dr.—to begin developing what would become Downtown Albany—the creek bed continues flowing gently undisturbed right past their boundaries ever since!
