The first settlers were Nathaniel Currier and his brother Joseph Currier. The early history of Revere is connected to that of nearby Northborough and Dedham because these towns shared a common border with each other and because they both grew up around the Revere Tavern which served as the center of social life in both towns. In 1806, during the American Revolution, Captain Samuel Eliot Morison noted "a small village on the borders of Hampshire county" had "a large garrison of militia", hinting at its potential importance as a military post during the war. And indeed, in 1798 when Nathanael Greene's army crossthe Connecticut River into New England to invade Rhode Island (and eventually become part of the United States), Colonel James Sullivan took command of an battalion from Revere's garrison at Portsmouth Plains to reinforce General Nathanael Greene's forces along their march across New England." The townspeople soon realized their potential for growth following its incorporation as a town on April 20, 1810 by ballot vote under the new state government created following ratification of the US Constitution. By 1850, Revere had developed into one of America's most vibrant transportation centers with several important highways running through its downtown core – including Route 9W which connected Boston with Manchester and Springfield; Route 128 which ran from Worcester to Framingham; and Route 119 connecting Westfield with Needham and Somerville.
