One reason for Quincy's importance as a settlement lies in its location on routeNH 5 (the "Old MA Turnpike") which connected Worcester with Springfield and other eastern towns and villages before crossing into New England via way NH 8 (the "New England Turnpike"). This provided easy access to goods transported down the Great Lakes and across the Atlantic Ocean by sea. Quincys main economic activity until after World War II was agriculture; however, since then there have been significant advances in manufacturing including textiles (including clothing for U.S. President John F Kennedy), plastics (manufacturing products such as polycarbonates), shoes and tires, food processing (dairying and manufacturing cheese), pharmaceuticals (such as Roche Holding AG) as well as light industrial production such as printing presses built by Samuel Morse & Company near Quincy’s original mill complex on Mill Pond Road in 1793. Today much of this production takes place outside of Quincy proper but some still does within town limits including Motorola Solutions Inc., Philips Healthcare Sverige AB, WBC/Webradio SA among others
