Quincy is one of the oldest continuously inhabited places in New England and home to many of its historical landmarks including the Quincy Market and The Samuel Adams Brewery. The area that now makes up Quincy was first settled by Indian fishermen who used what is now Quincey Beach for landing their catch. In 1638, Capt. John Smith discovered land on which Quincy would be built and named it after his friend Captain Edmund Quincey of London's East India Company. In 1775, when Boston was taken over by France during the American Revolution, General George Washington set fire to part of Boston using a fleet of French ships anchored off Portsmouth Harbor as part of his operations against British forces. This destroyed most of what remains today Of Quincey beach; however, he left behind a small piece that forms today's shoreline around Quincey Park - this known as Beacon Hill Park - while buildings such as The Old State House still stand on the other side of present day Quincy center Road (now Rte 128). In 1805-6 Reverend James Pierpont founded Plymouth Congregational Church in what is now downtown Quincy with twelve pioneer pastors from across New England. Reverend Pierpont donated land adjacent to Pioneer Cemetery for public school instruction which led to much growth within the town throughout ensuing years until annexation into Quincy by Woburn in 1922 caused much rural loss within our boundaries Finally in 1975 when all but two blocks were annexed into Woburn Village through referendum vote there followed rapid growth and development with new construction continuing until 2000 when major suburbs began moving into our once sleepy town setting back some long forgotten historic values
