In 1814, Captain Nathaniel Hawthorne set up a small gunnery school on Castle Island off Quincy’s shoreline for cadets from various ships belonging to Commodore John Fitch’s navy squadron stationed there. In 1850, this school moved to what is now Park Street and continued operation until 1925 when it closed due to lack of funding. One reason for its demise may have been because rifles could then be fired only from about 30 feet away which made it difficult for sailors and marines ashore to hit their target accurately with their cannons or pistols
