On December 12th 1861, it had a total population of 5597 and consisted of 721 dwellings; it included 802 people who owned land only and no slaves but also included 426 residents born free or naturalized citizens (of which 214 were men) On November 30th 1865 the area that would become Quincy was transferred from Pittsfield Township to Glastonbury Township under an act passed by the Legislature on December 6th 1865 It took until 1888 for Quincy to incorporate as a town; this happened after both Glastonbury Township (now Rockingham County) and Randolph (now Hampshire County) merged into Berkshire County. Quincy, Massachusetts is a town in Worcester County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 18,824 at the 2010 census. Quincy is one of the oldest cities in Massachusetts and has been around since 1636. It is the namesake of Quincy Market which opened in 1868. Quincy was first settled by English colonists in 1636 as part of the Plymouth Colony. The town was originally named Newburyport because it lay on the route between Boston and Portsmouth. In 1795, when Worcester County was formed from parts of Hampshire and Middlesex Counties, Quincy became part of that county. The first settler in Quincy was Samuel Sewall who built what is now known as Sewall's Point on Cape Cod Bay Shoreline on November 10th, 1636. He named his land "Newburyport" after his home town of Newbury, England where he had been born two years earlier. In 1700 John Eliot purchased 7 square miles (14 km²) of what would become Quincy from Samuel Sewall for £10/acre (3 ha). This purchase marked an important milestone for Quincy because it made John Eliot one of the first white men to settle permanently inMA; prior to this he had only traded with Native Americans and occasionally visited their villages along the coast while hunting deer or fishing for lobster. In 1795 Ipswich Township formed out of parts of Hampshire and Middlesex Counties when Worcester County was created; however, Quincy did not join Ipswich until 1800 due to its distance from other towns within that township including Northborough and Amherstburg which were then part of Norfolk County. On February 20th 1800 Daniel Webster wrote to then-Governor John Adams concerning some land purchases made by him near Nahant Beach: “I having laid down my claim near Nahant Beaches & having received positive assurances from your Excellency that I should have no difficulty therein – I took possession thereof & ordered Joannes Fiske Esqr surveyor public buildings […] but finding there are several goodable pieces adjoining my claimed ground viz”—this area included much later portions torn down by developer Bruce Gansler in order to build his gargantuan luxury condominium complex called Regency Park - “I am forced hereby to rescind my order […] I hope you will excuse me if I do not immediately proceed with making a report upon these affairs”—the resumption shows Webster’s haste as well as his awareness that he would be under fire from those who wanted control over Nahant beach access given its importance for shipping purposes.—NahantBeachHistory
