Quincy was settled in 1627 by the Pilgrims, who named it for General Francisquich de Quincy, a French military officer and one of the first white men to set foot in New England. The town grew rapidly and by 1700 had a population of over 2,000. In 1793, the town was renamed Worcester because of its location on the border between Massachusetts and Connecticut.
