In 1723, Increase Mather bought 1,000 acres (400 ha) of land south of Boston for £10 per acre (0.50 m2). He named it "Quincy". In 1837, Captain Nathaniel Parker Peabody donated lands to form Quincy Village which included most of what would become downtown Quincy today. The village was incorporated as a city in 1838 by an act of the General Court under authority granted by King George III following complaints from residents about inadequate housing and goods available for sale in the rapidly growing town center. During World War II many businesses were closed due to lack of war materials; however, after hostilities ended in 1945 many businesses reopened and continue to operate today including several banks which remain significant local institutions even into the 21st century.
