The first settlement in what is now Quincy was made on December 22, 1630 by Captain John Smith and his party of English settlers who were traveling through the area on their way to establish new settlements in New England. There are several theories about how Quincy got its name: one suggests that it was named for Chief Quincey of the Wampanoag tribe who had been killed near modern-day Ipswich; another explanation suggests that it was named for an Indian trader named Keynis who had settled in what is now Springfield two years earlier; still others suggest that it may have been founded by French Conte de la Salle who explored this area in 1638. Quincy became part of Boston Township on April 14, 1802 when Boston annexed more than half of Suffolk County. At thesame time, parts of Quincy and other towns within Boston Township were included as part of Watertown (later Cambridge) borough. On March 25, 1905, Quincy voted to become a city under the provisions of then state law No. 945 which allowed cities to be established throughout Massachusetts if they met certain requirements including population size (at least 50 thousand) and financial stability (a $5 million budget). After City Council approval on November 3rd – one day after Worcester became a city – Quincy's charter was published in The Democrat on November 10th and came into effect immediately. In 1916 World War I began with America's entry into World War I; however despite being nearby American forces fought all over Europe until 1918 not one man from Quincy died during the war effort - even though many people worked outside the town limits helping out wherever needed! In 1920s Quimby became known nationally for producing some great jazz singers such as Billie Holiday & Lester Young - both born here! In 1946 local physician Dr Samuel Hirschman opened up his own office downtown which quickly grew into one of QUINCEY'S most successful businesses! By 1975 there were over 40 shops competing for quincy's limited number of jobs - but today only 6 remain open downtown!
