Quincy is one of the oldest settlements in the United States and has a rich history dating back to 1795 when it was part of Worcester County. In 1837, Quincy became part of Springfield Township which later became Rockland Township. Quincy's first mayor was Moses Richards who served from 1827 to 1830. In 1851, Quincys first school opened with 15 students in a log cabin on the current site of Spencer Middle School. The first teacher for Quincy Elementary School was Lydia Putnam who taught from 1856 to 1860 before moving to North Adams where she taught from 1861 until her death in 1902. In 1907, the Boston Elevated Railway (BAR) came into being and began serving Quincy as well as other villages on its line including Wellesley and Brockton. BART would continue serving Quincy through most of its existence with some breaks during World War II when the town was placed under military jurisdiction while Brockton took over serve as the primary airport for that area. In 1951, after years of discussion by various committees and hearings, Quincy voters passed a resolution requesting that Springfield Township be merged into Quincy so that all residents could experience more seamless community amenities together including better shopping facilities and- most importantly- shared services such as fire protection and police services which had been provided separately by each municipality since their inception. As a result of this referendum vote occurred on November 3rd., 1951 Springfield Township merged into Quincy creating what is now known as "Quincy Heights".
