The history of Quincy begins with its founding by John Winthrop on April 20, 1630 as part of the new Colony of Saybrook in present-day Plymouth County. In 1636, Quincys first meeting house was built; it burned down in 1701. The next year saw the construction of what is now the Josephine Library and Museum within the current core of Quincey. In 1768–69, when Samuel Adams and his fellow signers of the Declaration of Independence were living in Worcester (now Worcester County) and holding frequent meetings at Mr. Knowles' house for political purposes, they organized their own meeting place there which they called "The Green Paul's Meeting House" because Colonel Paulus Van Dyke chaired that organization at that time. For many years after this event (property line changes notwithstanding), it was considered that Quincey was actually located between Southbridge and Framingham while Springfield lay just north across river from Quincys own land eastward to modern day Westborough village limits - an idea popularized by then-Mayor James Crowley during his campaigns for office back in the early 1990s but without any evidence to support such claims beyond rumor mill fodder... In 1824–25 Benjamin Rush served as Selectman for Quincy before taking up residence with his family near Boston where he later became Ulysses S Grant’s doctorate advisor on health issues during his presidency...In 1865–66 a bombardment led by General George Armstrong Custer destroyed much property including business districts around Fall River Junction leaving few buildings standing save one or two small stores still extant today known as “The Old QUINCY MARKET STRUCTURES” located off Route 128 just south of Fall River Junction...Quincy lost much more than its manufacturing base during World War II but has since regained some key businesses including several big box stores like Sears & Roebuck which closed their doors again last year following years of consistent decline....Today most people who live here know about our Revolutionary history thanks to local historian/museum curator Don Goudreau who started doing genealogical research into our Loyalists back in 1978 and published a book entitled "QUINCY: A History from Origins to Present" That same decade too another local historian named Jack Walsh began compiling data on all aspects surrounding Our Lady Of Perpetual Help Catholic Church mentioned numerous times herein throughout this document so feel free to click through should you ever be curious about her background 😉 It wasn't until recently when I stumbled upon an old article written by one Bob Kapp(a long gone resident) entitled "Quincy Celebrates 250 Years Ago Today - What did we learn?" which dives deep into historical details not typically covered elsewhere!
