The name "Pittsfield" comes from Sir John Johnson's estate called "Pitshall" located outside of Oxfordshire where he owned land that eventually became Pittstown. The estate passed through various hands until it came into the ownership of Nicholas Parsons who sold it to Samuel Eliot Morison in 1814. Morison named his new town after his friend and neighbor Edward Rutledge who had donated land to be used for education purposes in what would become Quincy, Massachusetts. In 1835 Rutledge donated 5 acres (20 hectares) of land off Anson Road east of downtownPittsfield to create what would become Northeastern University's graduate school of engineering and research buildings were constructed on this site beginning in 1942 by Ralph Eichler who also designed the university's Arena complex which now houses many different sports teams as well as classrooms and office space. The population density in Pittsfield increased steadily throughout much of the 20th century due largely to Methodists coming from New England looking for farmland or cheaper housing opportunities than found elsewhere within Berkshire County during that time period - resultant growth saw more people living in one place rather than scattered around multiple villages or cities like today. Traffic congestion on I-91 caused some shops and businesses near the highway closed during rush hours but this did not ultimately stop development or impede access to Pittsburghers either locally or nationally - instead it helped spur investment into transportation infrastructure such as expressways which continue to play an important role today when traveling between Boston/New York City/Hartford areas
