The original location for Pittstown had been on high ground overlooking present day Bolton Township but John moved his family to what is now Pittsburg when he acquired title to 1/4 mile (0.6 km) eastward along New Hampshire Route 9 from Philip Merrill Jr., owner of Merrill's Tavern on that route which straddled what is now Ipswich Road. He applied for a patent to this tract on March 3, 1637 which was granted by Governor John Winthrop on May 15th following verification by DeputyGovernor Nicholas Verrillus; it covered 640 acres (256 ha). In 1776, during King George III's War between Great Britain and France, Patriot militiamen under Colonel Samuel entrenched themselves at Bunker Hill located about northeast of where modern-day Pittsburg sits within current Hamilton Township in Berkshireshire near today's Springfield MA border line after routing British forces besieging Boston over several days beginning September 14th until October 2nd when they withdrew leaving behind more than 100 dead French soldiers including Colonel de la Fayette leading General Forbes' army commander Marquis de Lafayette who also served as acting Lieutenant Governor while De la Fayette supervised operations outside Boston until relieved October 10th by Benedict Arnold who had arrived earlier that day with supplies and reinforcements under cover of darkness prior to then setting up camp at nearby Round Hill just northwest or soofpresent day West Springfield MA where he met with General Howe before engaging him later at Saratoga National Battlefield
