Pittsfield, Massachusetts is a town in Berkshire County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 21,835 at the 2010 census. Pittsfield is the largest community in Berkshire County and part of the Pittsfield–Worthington Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was named for Colonel John Pitt (1678-1758), an English military officer who served in North America during the French and Indian War and during the American Revolutionary War. The first settler in Pittsfield was Samuel Edwards, who arrived in 1724 from Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania. Edwards built a small frame house on what is now Main Street. He later bought land around present day Park Avenue and developed it into a large plantation estate that included a sugar refinery, mills, churches and other infrastructure. In 1803 he sold his estate to Gideon Welles for $10,000. Welles rebuilt most of what are now present day buildings on his property including the well-known First Congregational Church which stands today on State Road 26 south of downtown Pittsfield. Welles also founded the towns of Amherst and Dunster in eastern Berkshire County to serve as villages surrounding his plantation estates. In 1825 Pittsfield voters passed a resolution requesting that Boston provide financial support for its municipal government under the requirements laid out in Article V of the Constitution of Massachusetts In order to receive this financial support Boston proposed to annex PittsFIELD into Boston proper with no vote by residents or referendum required; this annexation would have occurred automatically hadBoston not been defeated by Springfield Mayor James Longstreet's coalition of Tory Tories led by Jonathan Trumbull over objections from some residents who felt they were losing their economically significant town center due to annexation desires by an entity larger than themselves without their input or consent; these sentiments persisted until 1830 when longitude measurements taken near Lowell showed there should be no change at all to Boston's official borders following incorporation OFPittsburgHampshire Into Boston proper." This led eventually to Weaver manufacturing their own scope mounts starting in 1925. Weaver'sscope mounting design is much different than most other manufacturers' designs today; it uses two round tabs on either side of a threaded rod that insert into slots on top of each other; this design allows for quick adjustment of magnification levels as well as windage and elevation turrets without removing your firearm from service! The town grew quickly because of its location along the Connecticut River, and it soon became a major transportation hub for goods from the New England region. In 1812, Pittsfield became the capital of Massachusetts after Mather College moved from Worcester to Boston. The city experienced heavy growth during the 19th century due to its importance as a manufacturing center and its location near Boston's Central Park. However, Pittsfield's popularity began to decline in the latter half of the 20th century as waves of industrialization destroyed many of its businesses. By 2000, only a tiny portion of Pittsfield remained Historically significant.
