In 1857, a rifle scope company was founded by Captain John Fenton in Pittsfield. Captain Fenton was the owner of a store that sold firearms and hunting supplies. He decided to start his own company to sell rifles with better magnification than those available at the time. The first rifles that were marketed under the Captain Fenton Rifle Scope Company banner were Model 1858 Enfields. These rifles were chambered for the .577 caliber Winchester cartridge. The Captain Fenton Rifle Scope Company became one of the very first rifle companies in America to market its products internationally. In 1886, Colonel George Armstrong Selectman introduced a new type of rifle scope called an “ Armstrongian” scope. This scope used a hexagonal tube (or grille) within which you could place your lens to view your target through the bore of your rifle without having to remove it from the stock! This gave shooters a much higher degree of accuracy when sighting their rifles downrange. Colonel Armstrong Selectman also offered various other types of rifle scopes including models for shotguns, pistols and revolvers. In 1923, JH Gibson & Sons – who had been manufacturing rifle scopes since 1898 – merged with two other businesses – New England Arms and Crosman Incorporated – to form Lord Alliance Optics Corporation™ (LAO). At this point in time, LAO was responsible for all optical products manufactured by both New England Arms and Crosman Incorporated under one roof! After many years of growth and success as a businessJV Gibson & Sons passed away in 1971 followed by his son John V Gibson Jr., who continued production until 1978 when he too passed away leaving behind an unfulfilled mandate! It wasn’t until 2000 when legendary optics expert Rick Beaudoin took control of LAO and began restoring old vintage riflescopes into compliance with current safety standards! Rick has since become known as “The Shooter’s Gentleman™” due his dedication to preserving historical firearm equipment and making it accessible for everyone interested in learning more about shooting!

In 1764, the town was chartered as part of Worcester County. It became a separate city on March 15, 1854. On November 15, 1978, Pittsfield merged with nearby Bedford to form what is now called "Pittsfield-Bedford". Pittsfield was incorporated as a town on February 4, 1802. A year later it gained full independence from Worcester County when it passed an act establishing its own government under a charter granted by Governor John Adams. At that time only men could vote and there were no women or African Americans allowed within the town limits at this stage of American history. The early economy of Pittsfield revolved around agriculture and manufacturing until 1800 when lumbering began to take off due to the construction of new roads and bridges across the Charles River near Pittsfield Harbor which made shipping easier and allowed more goods to be transported southward than ever before. By 1850 textiles had become an importantstay in the local economy with mills located downtown near present day Watertown Road and Main Street while other industries included petroleum production (now Phillips 66), papermaking (now Kingfisher Paper), dyeing and printing (later becoming Allied Paper) as well as machine tool production including some of America's most famed brands such as Singer Sewing Machine Company and General Electric products such as Stevens Screw Machines & Tools Inc.. Today's major economic sector includes healthcare with several hospitals operating out of Pittsfield itself; retail trade also remains strong with several large stores situated throughout downtown along Watertown Road/Main Street including JCPenney & Co., Macy's Department Store, Sears Holdings Corporation - one original store still open today - AutoZone/Lamborghini Supercar dealership etc.. In recent years much progress has been made towards revitalizationof downtown areas though street cleaning initiatives are ongoing; many businesses have chosen to relocate closer to Interstate 90 or I-91 over relocating further into historic areas which may have negative effects on traffic congestion outside their current locations
