Pittsfield's history goes back to 1724 when Captain John Smith founded the settlement of Ipswich on the banks of the riverNHquirke in present-day Pittsfield. In 1786, George Washington and his army passed through Ipswich on their way to Battle Hill and White Plains. On December 12 of that year, General Washington gave a public dinner at which he presented Captain John Smith with a large tract of land in what is now Pittsfield Township. The first settler in Pittsfield Township was Nathaniel Parker who built a house on what is now Elm Street in 1792. In 1803, Josiah Quincy became Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives from Boston and married Mary Short ( daughter of Gideon Short). Mrs. Quincy moved to Pittsfield with her husband and children in 1806 and began an important role as headmistress at Newton Female Seminary where she served until her death in 1828. They also started a flour mill which continued until it closed during World War II due to shortages of resources; however, many local residents still remember Mrs. Quincy for her contributions to local economy and culture. The town has experienced several key moments throughout its history including: -1821 - When John Adams led an attack against British forces while serving as Minister Resident at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard; this event helped lead to America's independence -1825 - When General David Hunter abandoned his army numbering over 20 thousand men en route to Worcester because he could not find food or ammunition; this event helped spur other Patriots into action -1827 - Also during General Hunter's absence, Samuel Gridley Howe purchased 1/4 acre (0 hectare) near Market Square for $1 from Nathan Hale alias "Nathan Bedford Forrest" after Howe had been refused permission by Congress to purchase land directly from the Indians -1829 - A meeting was held by representatives from various townships in order to discuss forming a united village called “Pittsfield” - 1830 - After years of research by Drury College professor Elijah Palmer – one result being the establishment of mills around present day South Union Avenue – meetings were held again within six months culminating in creation of such institutions as “Drury College” -1836 - As part of efforts towards creating economic development within town limits, two Acts were passed providing tax relief for certain businessmen and businesswomen withinPittsburghedevelopment commission - 1840 - Another Act authorized erectionofa courthouse on Main Street opposite High School premises In 1881–82 three different schools opened: One operated by Congregationalists under Reverend Halsey Ladd; another operated by Baptists under Rev Elisha Porter; and finally one run jointly by both denominations under Reverend Gideon Welles Connor
