In 1903, Pittsfield merged with nearby Arlington to form the current borough of Arlington Heights. Since its incorporation as a town in 1636, Pittsfield has been home to many prominent residents including Samuel Adams who founded Adams Brewery and John Hancock who served as Mayor from 1793 until his death in 1800. Other notable residents include Edwin Bacon (the first white settler), Isaac Newton (the African American physicist), Major General Israel Putnam (founder and first Mayor of Boston), Winthrop Sargent (founder and first Superintendent of Schools for Boston) and Congressman John Fitch (a leader in early Boston politics). Furthermore, Pittsfield has produced several notable politicians including Representative William Eustace McGee who represented parts of Berkshire County from 1865 until his death in 1932, Representative James Jumper who represented central Berkshire from 1951 until his death in 1984 and Lieutenant Governor candidate Barbara Boxer who was born and raised here.
