Pittsfield, Massachusetts is a town in Berkshire County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 397 at the 2010 census. Pittsfield is one of the oldest towns in New England and one of the smallest incorporated municipalities in Massachusetts. The first settler was Peter Minuit and his wife Elizabeth Cushing on January 16, 1723. Pittsfield was officially chartered as a town on February 2, 1786 by Governor John Adams. The current form of Pittsfield took shape as a result of land acquisitions during the 18th century when many settlers were drawn to what became known as "the fertile plain". In 1827, John Quincy Adams founded an agricultural college in Pittsfield which became Brown University. By 1830, all but four residents of Pittsfield had joined the townspeople in voting to incorporate as a village under the provisions of state law that allowed for such incorporation if approved by two-thirds of all property owners within a municipality. On November 8, 1830, Pittsfield voted 50% against incorporation into Sheffield and won this decision by referendum. The period from 1800 to 1830 was characterized by steady growth in population due to waves of new arrivals who came seeking opportunities for education and land speculation. Many homes were built without regard to fireplaces or other conveniences that would soon be common among settlers throughout New England; instead these dwellings were heated with wood fires fueled by animal dung or charcoals which continued until well into the 19th century. In addition to providing heaters for everyday living, these fires also served as important sources of income during these early years since most people could not afford candles or oil lamps. During this time period there were also some major changes taking place within New England: first there was an increase in missionary activity across much of North America; second British rule ended withdrawal from India; and finally frontier settlements sprung up along the eastern seaboard where men began looking for new transportation routes and resources more than anything else! These areas saw rapid growth thanks largely to local entrepreneurs who capitalized on opportunities present both before and after American independence
