Gun safes have been in use throughout the history of Pittsfield, Massachusetts. The earliest known gun safe was built in 1672 by Captain John Smith. It consisted of a heavy oak door with a padlock and keyhole to keep firearms locked up. As time passed, other methods of locking up firearms were developed such as dog- traps and chainsaw locks. In 1892, the town began building its first municipally owned firehouse which housed four guns safes on different floors. These safes were used to store weapons for the firefighters. In 1933, the town acquired two shotguns from Winchester Repeating Arms Company and began using them for storage at the firehouse. At that time, there were only handguns stored in the Safes and no shotguns or rifles. In 1978, it was decided that handgun storage should be moved to one single location in order to simplify life for all residents. This new location was called “The Gun Room” and it has held onto this name ever since. Today, handguns are still stored here along with rifles and shotguns. One of the most significant changes that took place at The Gun Room happened in 1994 when municipality purchased a shotgun from .22 LR Winchester Repeating Arms Company which had been sitting unused for years due to its rarity (it is only available as an antique). At that time, The Gun Room became home to both handguns and shotguns as well as several rifle ranges which use pistols for target practice instead of rifles due to their dangerous nature! The GunRoom also underwent some renovations in 2007 which included installation of a stateoftheart security system including video monitoring and facial recognition software so that any unauthorized access would result in Arrest/ imprisonment!

In 1916 the company merged with Internationalsafe Co., Ltd.; this merger created one of the largest safe manufacturing companies in America at that time (Internationalsafe is now part of Benelli Safety Group).
Pittsfield, Massachusetts is a town in Hampden County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 11,827 at the 2010 census. Pittsfield is part of the Boston metropolitan area. It lies on the border of Hampshire and Worcester counties. The first permanent settler in Pittsfield was John Greenough who arrived in 1765. He built a saw mill on the river near what is now State Street and Main Street. In 1810, Nathaniel Eaton moved from Northampton to Pittsfield and began farming land around what is now Watertown Square. The first school in Pittsfield was built on College Road in 1812 by Rev. Amos Davenport and it served as the town's public school until 1834 when it became a day school under state law. In 1821, Major General Israel Putnam commissioned George Washington to design and build a new courthouse in Pittsfield which still stands today on Elm Street near present-day Market Square (now Financial District). The courthouse served as the town's court house until 1865 when it became an arsenal along with other buildings used for that purpose during World War I until they were sold off to become part of Eastern Illinois University campus circa 1945; however, some are still standing today within the confines of Eastern Illinois University's downtown campus proper! In 1825, Abraham Lincoln delivered his Prairie Home Address here before traveling north across Route 128 for his inauguration ceremony at Ford’s Theatre later that year; he also visited much of eastern Massachusetts during this time including Pittsburg where he attended Sunday services at Trinity Episcopal Church before returning home to Springfield! Spencer Tracy was born here on October 10th 1915 becoming one of America’s most renowned screenwriters/director/producer/actor having workeddirecting features such as "To Kill a Mockingbird" (1962) "Gone With The Wind" (1939)"The Sun Also Rises" (1946)", "A Place In Time" (1974)", "Patton" (1945)", "Rain Man" (1988)"Erin Brockovich" (2000) among others! Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger played high school football here while attending Archbishop Hoban High School before transferring to Stroudsburg Area Senior High School and then Pittsburgh Mellon Academy where he lettered two seasons starting all 12 games as a linebacker earning All-Pennsylvania League honors while also playing basketball for both teams captaining both squadshis senior seasonat PMAHe majored in business administration & marketing studies at Monmouth University after being recruited by then head coach Bill Belichick from Saint Joseph's Prep where he had played QB
