This law required all citizens over 18 years old to present a copy of their license to purchase any gun or knife; anyone found without a license could be subject to up to 5 months imprisonment and/or a $500 fine. Ammunition sales were also tightly regulated at this time with only Indian Head nickel bullets being allowed. In 1828, Pittsfield moved from its original downtown location across the river to what is now North Adams Avenue. At this point, it had become one of the most important textile towns in New England due to its large population base and proximity to major mills along the riverside. The town continued growing until 1870 when it reached its peak with a population OF 100,000 people! At this point, gun regulation laws changed again as violence against women began becoming more common in society; new regulations were put into place designed specifically towards protecting women from sexual assault by men with guns. Today, Pittsfield enjoys a long history as an agricultural town that relies heavily upon its farmland for food production as well as housing for its residents. The town was chartered on November 1st 1692 by General John Adams and named for Benjamin Pitts who had served in the British Army during the American Revolution. The first settler in Pittsfield was Thomas Wadsworth who arrived on May 10th 1701. In 1714, Samuel Palmer settled here and soon developed an extensive landowning business. By 1800, Pittsfield had a population of over 20 families and 2 churches and two schools - one public and one private - both of which were underprivileged with no central heating or plumbing until 1831 when a gristmill was built on Center Street near present day Market Square. In 1828, David Hale purchased 640 acres (240 hectares) northeast of the town center from Samuel Palmer for $5 per acre (2 €/acre). This land would be used to build what would become Hale Academy which opened its doors to students in September 1830 as one of only two such institutions in Massachusetts at that time. Other early colonists include Captain Nathaniel Parker who founded Parker's Ferry Landing in 1781; Thaddeus Stevens; Ebenezer Sibley; Enoch Pratt; Jabez Bowen; Solomon Northrup; Asa Whitney also among others Pittsfield’s earliest civic leaders included Captains John Smith (founder of Boston), Nathanael Greene (fighter against British forces during Revolutionary War), Increase Mather (founder of Harvard College), Simon Bradstreet (politician from Connecticut) During its early years Pittsfield enjoyed some commercial success including being home to Parson Weems’ Paper Mill where paper products were made until it closed operations in 1922 Aftermath of World War II caused significant unemployment within the military community as many soldiers returned home having been drafted into service Today Pittsfield features few if any commercial businesses aside from small agriculture-based businesses while most residents continue to rely heavily on services provided by government agencies including libraries, school districts, ambulance services and fire departments
