It is the seat of Pittsfield Township and the judicial and legislative districts are part of theоuthern Massachusetts Bay Colony. The Town of Pittsfield first settled in what is now Pittsfield Township on January 1, 1640. The original settlers were led by Reverend John Winthrop and General William Bradford. In 1736, the Treaty of Paris ended three years of war between Great Britain and France. As a result of this treaty, most English Protestants living in French Canada were granted citizenship by Parliament. This event led to increased immigration to North America from England as families seeking religious freedom or opportunities for economic growth moved to new settlements such as Pittsfield and Westborough. Pittsfield became incorporated as a town on February 22, 1811 under then- governor Samuel Adams’ act for that purpose; it was named for General George Washington (1737-1826), who had become an American political figure during the Revolutionary War (1689-1776). At its incorporation, Pittsfield included present day Burlington and part of Amherstburg townships; it also included two parcels from Woburn village which had been annexed into Amherstburg shortly before incorporation because that village could not support itself without annexation proceedings being initiated each time a parcel changed hands within its boundaries. In 1825–27, when Boston discovered goldfields near Amherstburg through survey work done by Nicholas Bourne with assistance from Captain John Smithson’s team on HMS Discovery (!—the first successful land exploration in North America) several thousand people decided to move to what would soon be called “The Golden Valley” due to its rich soil supply plus proximity to burgeoning transportation options including railroads coming downriver from Chicago (and later Boston). Because Pittsburgh's business district lay east of Centerboro center where passengers boarded trains going into Boston or New York City en route home they lost much potential traffic via Centerboro Junction where passenger trains came together changing tracks multiple times per day making it difficult for pedestrians or motorists getting off at one stop only to board another train going into Boston without having their bags checked luggage put on hold caused many merchants located along Centerboro Main Street – now Route 128 - closed their doors never again opening them until after World War II when Interstate 95 Narrow Gauge Railroad connection made them obsolete physically speaking although some continued operation as small businesses providing local groceries & sundries until shutdown in early 2000 among others
