By 1830, however, the Village had shrunk to just 100 people due to increased competition from larger towns within Middlesex County. However, this rapid growth did not last long; within 10 years or so post merger (1830), Pittsfield had returned to its original size thanks to rapid annexation by other settlements within Middlesex County (largely through annexation efforts by nearby Wellesley). During World War II much of what remains today of downtown Pittsfield were destroyed by bombing raids conducted by the United States Air Force during World War II; all that remain are some scattered buildings on Cemetery Hill and parts of Market Street north of Ivery Avenue which have been preserved as part of downtown PittsburgheseWalk since 1945 (the entire area now forms part of University Ave.).
