These settlers were the first to plant corn on the site now known as Pittsburg Landing. By 1772, all but a few of the original settlers had died from smallpox or other diseases brought over by newcomers. In 1814, Northampton County formed and Pittsfield became one of its townships. In 1828, it became a village and continued to be so until 1888 when it became a town under Middlesex County jurisdiction. A change in legislation effective January 1, 1888 made it an independent town with its own Board of Commissioners and mayor/council system The economy of Pittsfield has been heavily dependent on manufacturing since its founding as a village back in 1828; however this has gradually declined as more recent businesses have taken over these industries such as health care and software development A major sector that has seen growth recently is real estate; especially sincePittsburgh Township converted from agricultural to suburban zoning in 2002 . This has led to increased demand for housing through out the township which has created some tension between developers and residents
