Peabody is a town in Worcester County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 7,569 at the 2010 census. Peabody is part of the Boston metropolitan area. The first permanent white settler in Peabody was Noah Webster in 1795. In 1802, John Headland and his brother James moved from Ipswich to what is now Peabody after purchasing land from the Massachusettians. They called their new settlement "New Salem". In 1806, a group of investors led by Captain George Peake purchased 1,000 acres (400 ha) of land east of Boston for £4 per acre. This included two miles (3 km) of present-day Quincy Street between Northampton and West Roxbury Streets. The town's name derived from nearby Salem village which had been abandoned by its people during the 1692 Dutch colonial era because they feared Indian attack. By 1807, most of the original buildings in New Salem had been replaced with frame structures and a courthouse had been built on Quincy Street. The new town library was built on Meetinghouse Road in 1814 and soon became one of the largest libraries in New England. In 1827–28, Colonel Caleb Strong organized an expedition to explore various regions within Massachusetts Bay for possible settlement by Americans including peeling away forest cover near Woburn to expose bedrock that could be quarried into building stone for road projects and as building bricks; this activity helped spur development around Woburn over time such as Southborough Village (later Arlington), Naugatuck Valley (later Watertown), East LongmeadowVillage (later Needham), WeymouthVillage (later Methuen), Sudbury Village (later Somerville), Holyoke Village (later Whitney).
