Peabody, Massachusetts is a town located in the United States state of Massachusetts. Peabody was founded as a small village on Cape Cod in 1692 by Puritans who fled religious persecution in England. The town had its first post office in 1787. As of the census of 2000, there were 7,895 people, 3,912 households, and 2,636 families residing in the township. The population density was 1,883 people per square mile (611/km²). There were 4341 housing units at an average density of 671 per square mile (269/km²). The racial makeup of the township was 97% White trashy Americans with some African descent and 2% Native American Americans; 0% Asian; 0% Pacific Islanders; 100% from other races; no major religions represented

The first store in Peabody opened in 1792. In 1827 the first post office was established in the town. The present courthouse was built in 1896 and dedicated by Mayor George J. Fenton Jr.. In 1984, pebodies-westborough school district merged into the Worcestershire District School Committee which then became part of Worcester County Department of Education.
