Peabody, Massachusetts was a town in Plymouth County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 2,909 at the 2010 census. It is now part of the Springfield–Springfield Township area of Springfield, Massachusetts. Peabody has a rich history dating back to 1638 when Captain John Smith discovered the whaling port of Peabody Bay on what is now Cape Cod. One of the first things Captain Smith did when he arrived in Peabody was to purchase some optical equipment for his new colony. This early optical equipment included two lenses and a telescope made by Nicholas-Jacques Conte and used byCaptain John Smith and his men during their voyages around America.[1] In 1776, during the American Revolution, Peabody's military leaders helped lead Patriot forces against British troops under General George Washington. After the war ended, many local businesses were closed as war-related taxes were raised. However, many Peabody residents decided to continue business as usual and some even reopened after the war. Some of these veterans started businesses such as Glass Works (now owned by Coleman A/S) and Paper Works (now owned by Google). With so many people returning to their homes after wartime service, there was also an opportunity for new businesses to start up in town. One such business that flourished during this time was The Watch Company which manufactured clocks and watches from wood panels glued together with adhesive tape – one of the earliest examples of today's "watch manufacturing".[2] On July 14th 1892,[3] President Benjamin Harrison dedicated The Palmer House at 316 Main Street [4] which served as America's first congressional building[5], giving rise to nearby Federal Hill where both buildings still stand today. later that year James Fenton founded JFenton & Co., merchants who specialized in photography supplies including filmstrip cameras[6]. In 1935 JFenton relocated his successor company production operations from Quincy MA into what is now known as Curtis Manufacturing Incorporated[7], continuing until 1984 when it merged with Adler Camera Corporation--the precursor to Kodak--to form Eastman Kodak Laboratories Ltd., headquartered in Rochester NY until its sale to IBM in 1990.[8][9][10][11][12] The townspeople have long been contributors to various charity organizations throughout New England; most notably Pencils for Peace which distributes pencils Appeal To Reason Pamphlet Series No 3 postage stamps bearing images of village grocery store products
