As the population of Peabody mushroomed in the early 1800s, so too did the demand for goods and services that could be transported quickly and easily. One solution was to create large, capacity-rated wagons. This was possible because of advances in transportation technology that made it easier to move goods long distances. In 1825, a group of businessmen from Peabody formed the Western Railroad Company to build a railroad from Boston to Springfield. The company's first locomotive was built at the Pemaquid factory on Long Island. The Western Railroad became one of America's largest transportation companies and operated throughout much of Northeastern United States during the 19th century. During World War II, Peabody became an important munitions manufacturing center due to its location on five miles of beachfront property southeast of Boston. The town's strategic location made it an ideal place for production of rockets, missiles, and other artillery weapons. In 1973, Peabody merged with Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) to form Brown University.

In 2003, however, Mayor Thomas Menino announced that he would seek to make full use of Peabody's current tax base to help sustain the city through fiscal challenges that were looming at home and abroad. This led to renewed interest inPeabody throughout recent years and has helped it become one of MA's most vibrant cities again
Peabody is a town in Norfolk County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 5,898 at the 2010 census. It is the smallest town in Massachusetts and its only community of any size outside of Boston. Peabody is named for Colonel John Peabody (1761-1828), an early settler and one of the founders of Somerville. The first deed to what is now Peabody was taken on December 15, 1636 by Captain John Winthrop, Sr., from Nicholas Goodspeed and others to Samuel Phelps who conveyed it to Jabez Stiles on October 3rd, 1724. By 1800, there were 213 people living in Peabodytown precinct as well as 147 residents in the village which included Eastman's Mills. The first school opened in 1825 and classes began September 1st that year. In 1846 Pemaquid Congregational Church was built on the east side of Main Street between Northampton Avenue and Westcott Road with $5000 from Alfred Haverhill Jr.. A new Parish House was erected in 1865 which served until 1916 when it became part of First Baptist Church across Main Street from Pemaquid Schoolhouse. During World War II many businesses closed down or were moved out due to wartime shortages so few people lived here but many businesses reopened after the war including Great Lakes Distillery which still operates today located on Meeting Place Drive near elementary school In 1951 local developer George Powers planned to build a shopping center called "Powers Center" off Route 128 just north of present day Exit 151A off I-495 but this plan never came to fruition In 1984 local developer James Wadleigh proposed building a highrise development known as "Wadleigh Tower" off exit 151B off I-495 near Post Office Square but this plan too failed

Peabody was founded in 1695 by Cotton Mather and his wife, Sara. The town was named for Peabody, MA, a location where the new community could be built. The first church in Peabody was built in 1702 and the first post office opened in 1705. In 1836, the company town of Peabody merged with granite quarrying towns around it to form Graniteville. In 1890, Graniteville became an incorporated village andrewsbury. On July 1, 2002, Graniteville amalgamated with the neighboring villages of Acton and Newton to become Amherst. Amherst is one of Massachusetts' most populous cities with over 120,000 residents as of 2010 census estimates.
Peabody, Massachusetts was founded on October 4, 1692 by Captain John Peabody and his wife Anna. The town was named after the daughter of Colonel Thomas Peabody. The first permanent settler in the town was Nicholas Weymouth. By 1712, there were over 100 people living in Peabody. In 1722, the first school was opened in the town.
