Peabody is a town in Plymouth County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 3,879 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Boston metropolitan area. Peabody was platted on March 12, 1801 by John Peabody and other investors from Salem, Massachusetts as an agricultural and manufacturing community for settlers from New England who were seeking to escape the depression of the early 1800s. The first school in Peabody opened in 1805. The present day high school (grades 9-12) was built in 1902 and replaced a large barn that housed the town's library and meeting room until it burned down in 1903. The current building, which seats about 500 students inside and out, was erected following a fundraising campaign led by then-Mayor Raymond J. Buckley and First Selectman Seth Laddington. In 1951–1952, Peabody became one of only two towns in Massachusetts to become officially bilingual when its City Council approved legislation making English the primary language of government within city limits while also recognizing Spanish as an official language of Mexico City through a joint resolution from Mayor Buckley and selectmen Laddington. In 1952–1953, during America's civil rights movement banner year®, PeabODY played host to "Freedom Summer" protests against segregation at all levels of American society with students boycotting white schools throughout Plymouth County including local businesses that did not allow black children into their classrooms or use their restrooms without being segregated according to race or sex; many black families moved into Peabody during this time as well due to its racist atmosphere however few African Americans lived long enough to take advantage of its opportunities Since then much has changed including suburbanization/development around town center followed by more recent gentrification taking place along Lincoln Avenue near where US Route 20 runs parallel with Main Street although most residents continue to live close enough to their churches or grocery stores for continued access

It became one of the most important cities in New England because it had a large population and an efficient system of government. In 1836, Peabody was incorporated as a city.
