Peabody is a town in Worcester County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 9,824 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Worcester–Southborough–Fenway Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first white person to live in Peabody was Nathaniel Peabody who came to America in 1692 from England. He and his family founded a small farm on what is now Springfield Avenue about east of downtown Peabody. Nathaniel's daughter Susannah married John Adams, one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence, and their descendants still live there. In 1837, David Dudley Ward purchased land near present-day Peabody for $4,000. Ward built what is now known as Dudley House; it served as his home until 1857 when he sold it to Jeremiah Butterfield who renamed it "Butterfield Hall". butterfield hall became the first school building in Peabody when it was built in 1847 by Revd Abram Brownell and dedicated by him on November 12th. In 1865, General George Meade ordered US Troops quartered here during the American Civil War because they were fearful that if they returned home they would be attacked by Confederate sympathizers or worse. The troops stayed until early 1865 before being sent back home without anything more than a few belongings each. In 1868 Abraham Lincoln visit Peabody while he was campaigning for reelection and requested that local merchants send him items for his inauguration celebrations two weeks later which they did so enthusiastically . After Lincoln's inauguration many people began to move out of town because of lack of jobs opportunities outside of Boston or New York City during this time period . By 1870 only a handful remained within the limits set by Meade . By 1880 most residents had either left or moved away including Mrs Butterfield who sold her share in Butterfield Hall to Dr James Atherton (who then donated it to Yale University) . Eventually all but two houses within the original boundaries were demolished due to arrive too late for incorporation into any new community developments after demographic changes led to growing numbers of people living inside city limits rather than outside them with limited access to resources like farmland

In 1865, during the American Civil War, Peabody sided with Confederate America and fell into disarray. After the war ended, many residents left for new opportunities in nearby towns such as Worcester and Springfield. The population of Peabody declined until it reached its lowest point in 1965 when it had only 57 people living there permanently
