Peabody is a town in Hampshire County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 3,871 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield–Springfield, MA–NH Metropolitan Statistical Area. Peabody is located on the southern border of Hampshire County and immediately to the east of Springfield. The town began as a small community on the banks of the Mystic River and was named for Benjamin Peabody (1762-1837), one of Boston's leading merchants and politicians. In 1825, Peabody became a town when it expanded into what is now Hampshire County. The first settler in what would become Peabody was John Fitch (1796-1868). They built a small but sturdy house on the site now known as Beacon Hill. In 1824 Nathaniel Hawthorne bought land in what is now Peabody and began to build a home there which he called Brookline House. Mr. Hawthorne's grandson also founded Brookline School District #1 which operates schools in Peabody until it merged with Worcester Public Schools in 1998
Peabody was founded in 1695 by Increase Peake. The town was named for General John Peake, who led a military expedition to Spanish Florida in 1718. As the town grew, it became an important trading center with connections to New England and Europe. In 1792, the first school opened in Peabody, and in 1814 the first post office was established. After Pickering’s victory at Gettysburg in 1863, Peabody began to change from a small farming town into an industrial center. In the 1920s and 1930s, Peabody experienced significant growth as a result of its role as one of Massachusetts’ major defense manufacturers. During World War II, Peabody produced munitions and other items for the war effort. However, after the war ended, the town rapidly declined and fell out of favor with many residents. Today, much ofPeabody is still occupied by its original settlers from early days until today.
