Peabody is a town in Plymouth County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 5,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Boston metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1795 by Captain John Peabody and his family as a small settlement on Mount Hope Plantation east of Plymouth Village. In 1800, the Peabodys moved to their present site, which they purchased from Sir James Bowdoin in 1802. The town's first settler was Daniel Webster who arrived with his father and brothers in 1798. Peabody became an important commercial center during the 1800s due to its location at the intersection of New England Routes 128 and 3A (now Interstate highways I-95 and I-495). In 1807, Abraham Lincoln called upon General Nathaniel Parker to lead an army against British forces besieging Fort Sumter in South Carolina; however, local leaders declined to offer military assistance because they did not see themselves as part of American independence movements. At this time, Peabody had about 1,000 residents. In 1810–11, John Adams served as President of the United States; while living in Quincy he visited Peabody for dinner two times each week. As a result of this visit, much development took place around the corner from where Adams sat: new homes were built on what is now Starbuck Road and main streets were widened or rebuilt including King Street between Main and Meeting Streets (then called Union Street), creating what is now known as "Adams Square." Another significant event that occurred during Adams' stay was when he helped make necessary repairs to Increase Mather's house which stood on what is now State Street just south of modern day Haskell Avenue (the current site of Holyoke Town Hall). This gave rise to another popular name for Quincy – "Adams Square". "Adams Square" continued to be so renamed until it reverted back to its original name after George Washington's death in 1799 – "Mount Vernon". By 1830 there were over 4500 residents living within two blocks radius of Mount Vernon (~2000 compared to today’s population only 600 residents) making it one of America’s largest towns by then." After experiencing rapid growth following its incorporation into Plymouth County in 1898,[3] pebodic institutions such as businesses started appearing throughout early 20th century like Wm Higginson Electric Light Company[4], Masonic Lodge #2[5], ice cream parlor[6], music hall[7],[8],[9],[10],[11] (later replaced by movie theater), post office (#1), bank (#2), grocery store (#3)[12]), professional hotel(later converted into condominiums)[13][14]) along with churches such as First Baptist Church #1,[15] Methodist Episcopal Church #2,[16] Congregationalist Church [17][18],[19][/20],[21]. Some notable events that took place during this time include World War I veteran Everett Golson's funeral procession through town on October 25th 1918,[22] presidential inauguration ceremonies including Richard Nixon swearing-in aboard Air Force One January 20th 1969,[23][24][25][26] Dianetics Centers International Conference November 15-17 1990 held at nearby Ayer House Event Center[27], state coronavirus pandemic outbreak affecting eastern US December 2009 - February 10th 2010[]

Peabody, Massachusetts History began with the settling of the area in 1620 by Pilgrims. The town was named for Simon Peabody, an American Revolutionary War general and member of Parliament from Connecticut. A cotton textile mill was founded in 1792, but it failed and was replaced by a paper mill in 1822. The town's first school was built in 1828. In 1865, Peabody became one of America's first towns to adopt a municipal form of government. In 1916, the town voted to secede from Massachusetts and become its own independent state. However, this effort failed and Peabody remain part of Massachusetts until 1959 when it rejoined the state as an incorporated city. The history of Peabody begins with early settlers who arrived in the area during the 1600s and 1700s. One such settler was Nicholas Goodrich who arrived in 1620 and built a small cabin on what is now known as Main Street. Goodrich later moved to nearby Southampton where he erected another cabin which served as his home until his death in 1672. His son John Goodrich also lived in Southampton before coming to live at what is now known as Main Street between 1701-1714 while also constructing other buildings there including a sawmill and gristmill which functioned until 1830 when they were destroyed by fire). John Goodrich's grandson Nicholas Goodrich Jr., continued living on Main Street after his father's death until he moved away around 1800 when he settled down at what is now known as Plainfield which served him for many years (he died there about 1840). His son Nicholas Junior then took over property on Main Street which ran from present day Plymouth Avenue eastward towards Saybrook before turning south along Plymouth Avenue towards Adamsbury (the house still stands today). After Nichole Junior's death about 1850, his widow Mary leased her husband's land back to him for 20 years during which time she managed it himself (he did not die until 1870). About 1860 Mary sold her interest back to Nichole Jr., who again managed it for about 10 more years before selling it all together to James Hickey about 1875.) This period saw some major changes within the community since manorialism had slowly beginning disappearing throughout New England due primarily to religious reasons brought on by Quaker missionaries working among these settlers (see below)). In fact, most of these changes would eventually lead directly into Peabody’s annexation into Massachusetts through referendum vote back in 1915 although this ultimately did not come true due largely because Salem/Boston refused their requests ). After James Hickey bought out Mary’s interest back approximately 1975 changes came rapidly with virtually every family moving out except those that remained behind .
