Plymouth Colony resident Roger Williams renamed it after his friend and mentor John Peabody (1627–1695), an early signer of the Declaration of Independence. In 1802, the town received its current name when General Nathaniel Greene moved his forces to Peabody for protection from British forces under General Henry Knox. Peabody is located on the north bank of the Mystic River east of Boston. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , all land. The town is bordered by Waltham to the south and west; Brockton to the north; Allston to the east; and Northborough to the northwest. As of 2010, there were 7,651 people living in Peabodytownsend district including 4265 Head Start children and their parents/guardians

Peabody is a town in Worcester County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 12,453 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Worcester–New Bedford Combined Statistical Area. The towns of Hadley and Peabody merged to form Peabody in 1854. The first settler in Peabody was Nathaniel Gage who arrived in 1692 with his family from Ipswich, Suffolk, England. He worked as a cooper in Hadley and died there unmarried in 1748. His son Samuel married Anna Stoughton who had come to America with her parents and siblings during the Cromwellian English Civil War (1649-1653). They settled near Lancaster on Cape Cod where they built a large house called "The Great House." From this house they developed an export trade that included choice fruits and vegetables and other items exported to Europe by sea. After their death their children divided their inheritance among themselves without including Anna who moved to Framingham later that year to become the wife of William Perkins (1720-1793), one of the most important men in early American history. In 1776 John Adams visited Peabody for dinner and praised its excellent architecture which he said resembled "the old Italian cathedrals". He also remarked on its location on cape Cod: "This goodly cape lies athwart our course; it commands all that we have or may hereafter enjoy" In 1783 John Eliot founded Harvard University at Cambridge, MA., which attracted many students from Peabody who helped finance his education. In 1827 Isaac Fowler donated land adjoining Harvard Yard for college use and named it after him – Fowler Campus today. Many prominent people were associated withHarvard before it became UNIVERSITY property including James Mill, Oliver Wendell Holmes Sr., Edward Everett Hale, Quincy Adams Abbot, Winthrop Scott
Peabody was founded in 1795 by Samuel Peabody. The town was named for the Captain of the vessel that brought it to Boston, Samuel Peabody. The first store in town opened in 1800. In 1825, a railroad was built through Peabody and it became an important stop on the line. In 1836,the first paper mill in Massachusetts was built in Peabody. The town experienced rapid growth during the late 19th century due to its strategic location on the line connecting New England with Illinois and Missouri. However, during World War I, military construction destroyed much of the town's buildings and economy collapsed following increased taxes imposed as a result of wartime production. In 1922, Peabody merged with neighboring towns Northampton and Southbridge to form one large city called Northampton-Peabody. During World War II, many residents relocated to war production sites around Albany and West Springfield due to shortages of housing in those cities after the bombing raids against Hiroshima and Nagasaki
