The city was renamed Peabody in 1902 after Captain John Peabody's wife, Eliza Morton Peabody. Today, PeabODY is one of the most vibrant towns in Worcester County with over 50 businesses and 800 residents. The first settlers of what would become Peabody were Captain John Peabody and his brother-in-law Samuel Adams who came from Northampton, MA in 1795. They began building a house on what is now Elm Street within sight of the new Winchester Rifle Factory where they worked for King and Spalding ammunition dealers. After some time they moved their business to what is now Main Street which became their home for many years until they sold it to Reverend Nathaniel Hawthorne in 1815. Reverend Hawthorne had come from Marblehead MA and started an academy there so he could provide instruction for children living nearby including future Congressman Jonathan Edwards (1797-1851). For many years this area served as an agricultural center with gardens that surrounded a large mill run by James Montgomery (1693-1768) which manufactured flour, cattle feed, candles and other goods for local consumers. In 1836 Mayor Ebenezer Webster decided that incorporation into a city would make life easier for merchants who needed more regulation than just being able to sell products without having to worry about taxes or regulations from elected officials concerned about the well being of their citizens - something that hadn't been possible previously because there wasn't yet enough space or infrastructure available for cities like Worcester at that time! He also wanted to attract investment into the city so it could take on some of the challenges associated with becoming part of a larger community - such as getting water systems built and streets paved (something still not possible today!). So on October 8th Mayor Webster submitted a resolution asking voters if they wanted to become part of Boston proper! On November 3rd over 60% of voters agreed with Mayor Webster's proposal making PEABODY officially an incorporated city! PEABODY experienced rapid growth during its early days due largely to its location on radial transportation systems which allowed goods and people quickly Moving around New England without having any trouble finding an open spot or waiting long periods Of time for transportation To arrive! And since everyone who lived here used everything belonging To them no matter how small or rudimentary it might have been - things continued moving quickly even when production stopped nearby And people hadTo start trading With others just To get By! This openness & dynamism led directly To PEABODY becoming one Of The Most Progressive Cities In America At That Time! Worcester County was formed out of parts of Hampshire & Norfolk Counties on July 1st 1792 following recommendations From General Court MVP Jabez Moon & Commissioners David Stonehouse & Moses Greenough!!! Nowhere did our government seem more Reformed then In Our Town Which Was Governed By Aldermen Who Were All Chosen By ThePeople Themselves !!!!!!!
