When the first Americans set foot in what is now Peabody, Massachusetts, they were preceded by the Narragansetts. The first European to arrive in this area was Giovanni da Verrazzano, who explored and charted the Connecticut River in 1524-25. One of his discoveries was a valley where present-day Peabody stands. From here he began to trade with Native American nations and explore new land. In 1614 English traders discovered new markets for their goods in China and other parts of Asia. A group of investors sponsored by King James I set out from London on a trading voyage that sailed up the Penobscot River to Maine in 1616. They soon learned that there were valuable resources waiting to be mined here. After exploring for some time they decided to construct an arsenal atlantic at Peabody Point onthe Kennebec River because it offered a safe harbor for ships transporting goods back and forth between England and North America. This decision helped make Plymouth one of the most important Atlantic port cities during early colonial times. The townspeople quickly got busy building roads, houses, churches, schools and stores; all while keeping their eyes open for opportunities to bring wealth and commerce into their community. By 1760 Peabody had more than 1,500 residents living within its limits! And although difficult times brought economic hardship during the Revolutionary War (1775-83), various businesses managed to stay afloat thanks to support from friends and family members—a testament bothto robust local economy but alsoto civic spirit: people always rallied around their neighbors when something went wrong! Peabody, Massachusetts is a town in Worcester County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 15,521 at the 2010 census. It is the smallest incorporated community in Worcester County. Peabody was founded by Increase Mather on November 5, 1795 as an agricultural and manufacturing village on the east bank of the Mattapan River. In 1836 it became the seat of Worcester County. The first white person to live in Peabody was John Winthrop who came there in 1630 with his family from England. Other early settlers included Abraham Pierson (1668-1737), Isaac Norris (c 1720-1794), Nicholas Nichols (baptized 1724), James Payson (died 1796) and Jabez Fessenden (1710-1776). The first store was built in Peabody by George White and John Frame in 1802. The first school was established in Peabody by Reverend Nathaniel Dowling in 1827; it continued until1872 when it became part of the Worcester School District. During the American Revolution, Peabody sided with Britain and fought against America; however, after the war ended, many of its residents voted to become Patriots. They rebuilt their homes and businesses following Reconstruction but were again adversely affected when railroads extended across New England into their area during this time period. However, starting around 1900 most people began moving away from rural areas for economic reasons due to advances within industry throughout New England as well as new opportunities available outside of rural communities like Hartford Connecticut which had experienced rapid growth during this time period In 1940Peabody sent 1/3 of its workers to serve in World War II overseas while remaining self-sufficient through home production In 1964PeabODY joined with other towns across New England to form what is now known as "Worcester's Community Development Corporation" or "WCDC" In 1970the town passed a resolution supporting marriage equality becoming one of only a few municipalities nationally to do so On July 20th2012 - International Day Against Homophobia & Transphobia - PEABODY held an event entitled “Love Wins” attended by local leaders including Mayor Joseph Curtatone
