Northampton, Massachusetts is a town in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 23,691 at the 2010 census. Northampton is the smallest municipality in Massachusetts and has the lowest population density of any municipality in the Commonwealth. It is part of the Boston metropolitan area. The first white settlers arrived in what is now Northampton on July 3, 1638 by boat from Ipswich, Suffolk County, England. On November 2 of that year they organized into a company and started to build a log cabin on land they had just acquired east of downtown Northampton. The first post office in Northampton was established on February 17th, 1812. On December 12th of that year John Smith led an expedition upriver from Sandwich to establish trade with the natives near present-day Quincy and thus began open hostilities between English colonists and Native Americans known as the "Quincy Massacre." As a result of this event many Englishmen left for other parts of New England before it became too dangerous to continue living in what is now Massachusetts. The original town site was located where modern day Quincy stands today within walking distance of all its historical sites including Harvard University and State House Plaza which are also included within Quincy's city limits. In 1825 local citizens voted to incorporate as a village under then-Governor Andrew Johnson but it did not happen until 1835 when voters passed an act creating Middlesex County comprising all land westward from Worcester River except for part owned by Springfield; these lands were annexed by Northampton four years later on April 15th, 1847 following General George Washington's visit there during his military tour through New England (the "Boston Campaign"). In 1959 when Northampton became one town again it lost its charter privileges so it could no longer levy taxes but still receives services such as trash collection from Boston Township even though it technically resides outside Boston proper jurisdiction! Easton Village annexed into Berkshire County after that village's incorporation date but eventually regained its charter privileges because Berkshire had no intention whatsoever ever annexing Easton Village! Finally we have Springfield which unsuccessfully tried annexation via referendum back in 2003 despite being wellwithinBoston's boundaries! All these examples serve as testament to how extremely important towns like Northampton are not only economically speaking but also politically speaking - their status can often be determined by how much clout they wield within their respective communities/townsfolk groups

Northampton was founded in 1630 by Puritans from England as a small settlement on the Exeter River. The town grew quickly and by 1821 it had a population of over 509. In 1825, Northampton became one of the six towns in new Middlesex County when that county was created from portions of Essex and Norfolk counties. By 1830, however, the growth of nearby Springfield had necessitated increased development in Northampton proper and so its official status declined until it was incorporated as a city in 1903. The history of Northampton can be traced back to 1630 when Puritan settlers arrived on theExeter River. It may have been named for an early settler or for an area near Plymouth where some English colonists had settled earlier that year. A plaque located at the corner of High Street and Ipswich Avenue commemorates this early history. In spite of its small size, Northampton soon became one of Massachusets' most important settlements because it served as the capital for Middlesex County during its formative years (1625-1629). In 1825, when Middlesex County was created from parts of Essex and Norfolk Counties, Northampton became one of itssix towns. Northampton's rapid growth continued into the 1800s; by 1800 it boasted a population exceeding 1,000 residents! During this time also came significant advances within local trade: in 1801–1802 Samuel Morse invented electric commerce while living in Easton;[1]in 1827–1828 Nathaniel Hawthorne wrote One Hundred Years After,[2] while John Adams penned A Defense Of Boston Common (1776).[3] These aforementioned events helped contribute to what is now known as downtownNorthampton's rich engineering heritage dating back to pre-electric days – many notable bridges still stand today including Route 128 across Ipswich Creek,[4][5]the Amos Kendall Bridge[6],and New Britain Avenue bridge which carries Interstate 95 between Hartford and Quincy.[7][8] Almost all these structures were built during period when locomotive powered transportation dominated American life – horse drawn carriages could only travel up to about 25 miles per hour with good accuracy before they started to slow down significantly due to atmospheric drag forces; thus major transportation innovations like steam traction cars appeared relatively late compared with such contemporaries as Robert Stephenson’s Manchester Railway Company or George Stephenson’s Liverpool & Manchester Railway Company which opened their lines between Manchester and Liverpool just two decades later!
