This type of prism allowed Forster to resolve small differences in color but only if they were close enough to his eye. The second early optical device was a Diffraction grating (DG), which was invented by Friedrich Wilhelm Röntgen in 1879. A DG is a metal sheet with several concentric circles drilled into it such that each circle reflects incident light equally at every angle within its range of incidence (i.e., perpendicular to the surface on which it is placed). By placing one or more gratings on various angles around an object, Röntgen could determine how well each element in the object would scatter sunlight according to its distance from him (see Figure 1). In addition to determining how bright an object appeared from near or far away, he also determined how scattered sunlight appeared due to changes in air pressure over time

Northampton, Massachusetts is a town in Hampshire County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 23,821 at the 2010 census. It is the second-largest town in Hampshire County after Somerville and it borders the towns of Amherst to the north and Cambridge to the east. Northampton is part of the Boston metropolitan area. The site of modern day Northampton was originally inhabited by Algonquian people. The first European settlers arrived in 1636 when Captain John Smith and his men discovered land that would become Northampton on Cape Cod. They named their new settlement "New Salem". In 1642, English colonists founded what became Amherst after defeating French forces at Battle of Bunker Hill. This event signaled a change in British colonial policy which began to allow for more open settlements within Indian territory. On October 14, 1692, General Thomas Gage ordered Nathaniel Shays to bring obstacles between Ipswich and Northampton so that Puritans could establish a permanent settlement there without fear of attack from Native Americans. In 1784, Joseph Gardner purchased 640 acres (250 hectares) of land northeast of present-day Northampton from Nicholas Fisk for £900 sterling ($15,000). Gardner built an estate called "Gardner's Grove" on this property which still stands today as one of the most iconic examples of Georgian architecture in America. He also laid out roads and streets through his estate which remain important features today; these include Gardner Road (now Route 128), Cherry Street (now State Route 97), Park Drive (now Interstate 95) and Highbury Avenue (now Route 128). In 1812, Reverend Samuel Morse located a semipermanent school for children near what is now Middleton Center Boulevard in what would become Northampton; this school would eventually be renamed Emmanuel Episcopal School after Morse's death in 1837. In 1828–29, James Kapp platted much of present-day Northampton onto parcels he had purchased from Jonathan Edwards some years earlier; this plat included large areas including portions of Oakdale Cemetery and Southwick Pond where Kapp built his home now known as The House on Elm Street (). On July 1, 1838,[1] during freak weather conditions caused by a severe thunderstorm over New England,[2] three smallpox outbreaks occurred near Amherst; these outbreaks led to fears among local residents that smallpox might spread further into neighboring towns should such an outbreak occur again.[3][4] As a result, all public buildings were closed throughout Amherst during July and August 1938 while sick people were moved to other towns across New England.[5][6][7] One local historian has written: "It cannot be overemphasized how close personal contact with smallpox survivors may have helped reduce hysteria or panic among locals".[8] However similar outbreaks took place elsewhere across New England not long afterwards[9]; thus even though it did not cause widespread panic it did create awareness about smallpox which could potentially have made it easier for another pandemic breakout should one occur again."
