In 1804, General George Washington visited Northampton and observed "a very fine church with a good tower" which he called "an excellent specimen of English architecture." At that time, only 7 percent of all churches in New England were built in brick or stone; however, Stone Chapel became one of the most renowned brick churches in America. In 1819, when Boston's Main Street crossed over into Hampshire County through Milton on what is now Route 128 (then called Middlesex Road), Northampton's citizens voted unanimously to name their town after then-President James K. Polk – who had just become Vice President under Andrew Jackson – with a resolution thanking him for his support during the Mexican–American War years earlier. On July 4th, 1907 – Independence Day – residents set off fireworks from an old mill located about two miles south of town along present-day Route 128 opposite Interstate 95 (the border between Massachusetts and Connecticut). This event helped kick off summertime festivities that continue to this day throughout much of Northampton village square near where Main Street meets I-95/Route 128 junction
