On July 15, 1898, Northampton withdrew from Suffolk County and became a separate municipality again under the name of "Northampton". The most recent municipal election took place on November 3rd and resulted in a victory for incumbent Mayor John DeSantis (R). This was largely due to his work on infrastructure projects such as expanding local transportation options and creating new parks and libraries within the town limits. Other candidates who came close to winning included former State Representative Geoff Diehl (D), 4th District Attorney nominee Denise Merrill-Pope (D), City Councilor Menard Hoffman (I), and Treasurer candidate Kathleen Sullivan (D).
