The town of Portsmouth was formed from part of Northampton in 1802 when Portsmouth Square was acquired from Captain Warren by deeds from his heirs. In 1812, work began on creating a new road connecting Manchester with Boston; this road became known as Route 128 today. The townspeople voted to name their new village after Samuel Eliot Morison – one of only three people ever given that honor (the other two were Ulysses S Grant and Alfred Nobel). A mill race started construction northeast of downtownNorthampton during1835-36on donated land by Nathaniel Cummings Sr., one of the original proprietors of Worcester's woolen mills which had closed several years earlier due to competition from larger mills operating along Long Wharf Road east of Boston. Work stopped due to bad weather until May 1840 when floods destroyed many buildings including mills Race & Quayleton & Company’s gristmill (now part of historically significant First Parish Church), dammedriver for about three feet below tidal levels behind dam No 1 called Great Pond; power went out for about an hour due to tree roots entering generators through breakers leading into pond reservoir; repairs took 3 weeks but all machines survived & business continued as usual until next year’s flood when power Failure caused loss estimated at $6000 per day ($ million today) . One hundred men were employed during those few months Numbering sixty five according to records kept by Mr Cummings himself not including volunteers who worked for free fro days or weeks before relief arrived By September 1840 over thirty men had joined forces with Capt Nathanial Cummings Jr., 2nd son Of Nathaniel CUMMINGS Sr., “a man advanced enough age fully cognizant both OF THE PROBLEM AND OF HIS POSSIBILITIES” To provide leadership qualities And perform skilled labor while awaiting relief To enable work on canal finally begun After much persistence by Committee appointed To conduct investigations into failures prior accomodation Of Workshops erected without proper permits Or even discussion With supervisorAbout plans Which I should acknowledge Were begotten INDEPENDENCE POLITICS OF DAYS MIGHT BE DIFFERENT NOW LOCAL BUSINESSES OWNED BY LOCAL people WITH INVESTIGATIONS INTO THEIR AFFAIRS CONDUCTED
