Cast lead balls were effective at close range but were very heavy and required a lot of force to fire them. They also had a short lifespan, only lasting about five shots before becoming exhausted. These ballistics made them unsuitable for military use and were replaced by other materials such as bronze balls which could be fired with more precision and had a longer lifespan. Cast lead balls became popular in the late 1700s when cannons started being developed for war against Spanish forces in South America. The Spanish cannons could shoot far beyond the reach of normal artillery, so casting large quantities of lead balls was necessary to create enough firepower to defeat these powerful guns. This led to the development of new types of ammunition including cast iron balls which could be fired with more accuracy and lasted much longer than bronze balls.
