In 1701 Nathaniel Read moved from Ipswich, Suffolk, England with his wife and three children to start a new life in Northampton after experiencing religious persecution there four years earlier under King George I of Great Britain. They named their new settlement after Lord Dartmouth (the father-in-law of Nathaniel Read). Nathaniel Read may have also been inspired by John Winthrop's 1598 sermon "A Model Government for America" which urged New Englanders to form themselves into villages governed by elected officials instead of proprietary proprietors with absolute power over their lives and property. In 1704 read sold his land around present day Northampton Center back to Plymouth Colony settlers for $60 pounds sterling or $2 per acre (at that time about ). Afterward Northampton became one of several townships within Plymouth Colony until itwas incorporated as a separate township on November 3, 1768 when King George III granted its incorporation into Hampshire County (). On July 14, 1812 during the War of 1812 Captain John Stephen Brown led HMS Cumberland against USS Constitution off shore near modern day Salem Beach; Brown was hanged for treason two days later along with other sailors including surgeon James Freeman due to political beliefs concerning American expansionism The USS Constitution took no damage but 5 men were dangerously wounded including Brown who lost both legs below knee while tryingto save them
