North Adams is located in the geographic region of Western Massachusetts and Eastern New England. The town straddles the border of Worcester County to the east and Hampshire County to the west. It borders five other towns: Amherst, Bedford, Belmont, Concordia-Elmira (population 3,898), and Northampton (population 5,912). The first European settlers in what is now North Adams were Englishmen who arrived in 1636. They named their new land "Newbury". In 1641, King Philip's War began and many English residents left for Rhode Island to fight against Spain. A group of these English men founded the town of North Adams on a hill overlooking which Worcester County lay. There they built a small school, harvested crops for food, hunted animals along with sellingassements from their kill to Indians who lived near by. The area where North Adams stands today was full of trees and brush because there wasn't any farmland then. When General John Sullivan advanced through Essex County during the American Revolution his forces burned barns and homes as they passed through this area looking for British troops caches he thought were hidden inside these woods! In 1801 Governor Elbridge Gerry ordered construction of an Erie Canal which would connect Lake Ontario with Boston Harbor making it possible for goods brought downriver from Philadelphia to be transported across America without having to go through New York City or Albany! This new development led to increased trade between North Adams and other towns in western Massachusetts such as Amherst and Norwich which became known as "the Tri-State Area". In 1831 when Alton Sanford offered 2 acres (0 hectares)of land adjacent to present day NorthAdams corner lot for $1 per acre it was accepted! This site is now home to several businesses including Pembroke Farms Dairy & Creamery; Edwin Mellen seeds; Foley's Supermarkets Incorporated; First United Methodist Church; Randolph House Museum; Andover Glass Company.; Newton Academy School (); Village Coffee House ();[and] numerous others since it has been part of Emerson University's campus since 1978
