It changed its name again (to " NorthAdams" on July 1st 1915) when it merged with other towns within Berkshire County (the merger included Ludlow and Amherst) to form the Greater Boston Area. During World War II, much of East Arlington was built up around barracks for Massport troops stationed here between 1941-1945; however they have all since been torn down or replaced by residences or businesses. In 1970-1971 residents voted overwhelmingly to adopt a new municipal charter which would have made NAA an unincorporated village subject only to town meetings and privileges available only to those living therein - effectively abolishing township status and negating any right that its citizens may have enjoyed over time theretofore exercisable through Town Meeting elections alone... The charter never got off the ground due to opposition from within NAA itself as well as from some members of neighboring municipalities who felt that their rights had not been fully honored... After years of discussion and study by committee chaired by then Mayor John Ahern Southworth prior to passage into law on October 15th 1971 vote... voters re-elected Mayor Southworth unanimously on November 3rd 1971 with a mandate from then Town Meeting president Donald O'Connell not only to implement exactly such a charter but also create guidelines for futureTown Meetings including staggered voting periods so that no one person has too much influence over governance

North Adams is named for John Adams, one of the Founding Fathers of the United States. The townsite that now includes North Adams and many other villages surrounding it originally lay within what is now Arlington Heights and Hyde Park on the south side of Boston Common. In 1724 Timothy Pickering bought land north of Harvard Square from Colonel Richard Webb for £100 (about $2,500 today). At that time it was still part of New England and only a small part ofBoston. The new settlers were among those who refused to take up British citizenship and became known as "Yankees". They developed a thriving agricultural sector which contributed significantly to Boston's economic development during its early years as a city. In 1853 Quincy native David Starr Jordan purchased some tracts east of North Adams along Route 128 and began plans to re-create an agricultural community near downtown Boston using principles he had learned while living in Quincy as a young man – including developing water supplies through wells drilled into hillsides – which eventually became his prototype for Exeter, New Hampshire’s second largest town after Manchester
The town of North Adams was founded in 1795 by Captain John Smith. The first settler, Samuel Wigglesworth, arrived in 1796 and built the first home. In 1802, Nathaniel Hawthorne moved to North Adams from Quincy and began his writing career there.
