English colonists began arrive in 1636 when Capt John Winthrop sailed up the river with his party from Plymouth Colony. They built a small town on what are now the east side of Route 9 near present day South Hadley and founded Lancaster Company store there as well as another store on Meeting Street which still stands today. The town grew rapidly and by 1768 it had a meetinghouse, tavern, schoolhouse and six-acre (2 ha) piece of land grant from King George II that led to its name being changed to NorthAdams after some residents petitioned for it to be changed because they did not want their village located "north of" Hampshire County line! In 1814 Springfield was incorporated as part of Hampden County; but because Springfield lay outside of Boston's political boundaries it continued to be known as NorthAdams until 1828 when it became part of Boston proper through an act of legislature.. The town dates back to 1636 when it was part of Duxbury Township. In 1826, North Adams became a part of the new United States territory of New England. In 1828, it incorporated as a village. On July 1, 1860, North Adams became one of the towns in Worcester County when that county was created from parts of Hampshire and Middlesex counties. On April 14, 1865, Worcester County merged with Franklin County to form Massachusetts Bay Colony. On November 3rd 1870 North Adams voted to secede from Massachusetts Bay Colony and become an independent city under the name "North Adams". The first mayor was George Prentice who served for two terms until his death on December 24th 1871. His son Julius Prentice served for four terms (1872-1878) before he also died at age 62 on October 25th 1880. John Fenton took office as mayor on January 1st 1881 and held that position until May 5th 1886 when he resigned due to ill health.. James Hickey took office on May 5th 1886 and held that position until his death in 1893. City Council meetings were held at the old Congregational Church which had been built in 1793 and remodeled in 1898-99 by noted Boston architect Andrew Eliot Smithson Jr.. After Hickey's death City Council meetings were conducted at home through a secretary/ recorder who did not have any legal power because they could only make recommendations without passing ordinances or making laws themselves... A fire destroyed most of downtown NorthAdams on November 25th 1888 after a daylong riots which began over price control measures put into effect by Mayor Hickey... The first African American to be elected as Mayor of NorthAdams was William Jelks who won election on November 3rd 1870 with 73% of the vote
