North Adams, Massachusetts is a town in Essex County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 10,787 at the 2010 census. It is the most populous municipality in Essex County and one of the largest in New England. North Adams is home to Amherst College, which was founded in 1813 and has been called "the first collegiate institution of its kind in America." The townsite that includes North Adams was settled by English settlers who erected a small frame house on an oak-hickory forested lot on what is now Market Street in 1775. In 1827, the town of North Adams merged with the villages of Amherst and Holyoke to form the Town of North Adams and Hingham (later part of Lynn) Village Corporation. As early as 1776, Native Americans were living near present-day North Adams. On July 6th, 1776 - two days after Patriots began skirmishing with British forces along the Nashua River - some militiamen from Cambridge detachment under Lieutenant Colonel John Stark forced Chief Wampanoag to sell them potatoes at gunpoint for passage across Lake George back to their tribe's land south of Boston Harbor. This event helped lead to increased British interest in this area due to potential trade opportunities with Native Americans; however, no Indian trading posts or settlements were established until much later during this period when white men started arriving here more frequently as missionaries and traders. In 1827 – after voters approved a petition calling for incorporation into a town – NorthAdams became one of twelve townships (towns made up mostly of rural sections) within the newly formed city of Amherst (founded December 14th 1830). AsAmherst grew larger it needed more housing so new streets were built such as High Street between Pleasant and Warren Streets where businesses once stood today including Heald's drug store which continues operation on Hanover Square today as Wellesley Drugs Incorporated . In 1895 when Amherst had reached its peak as an educational institution with over 1,200 students attending various colleges/universities throughout New England it merged with Harvard University becoming known as "The Landmark School". Naming rights for many priceless buildings within Amherst Campus including Lawrences Hall (now Faculty Club), Winthrop House (now Ruthven House), Mount Auburn Girls' School building #2 & 3 & 4 etc.. continued until 1969 when they passed out again along with other assets belonging to both schools when Harvard divested itself from Yale University resulting in Hartford taking over these properties At its height amethyst mining took place here but production ceased following major floods that occurred during winter months 1966-67 followed by low demand for gemstones worldwide which caused prices to crash Today there are several small businesses located around downtown+Hingham Hillside which offers nice walks away from all this commercial noise while also having some great restaurants like Panera Bread&Bakery&Cafeteria nearby

By 1700 both towns had more than 1,000 residents and by 1793 they numbered over 10,000 people. The first school in North Adams opened in 1796. In 1812 North Adams successfully petitioned for statehood as well as a charter from Massachusetts General Court which granted it on April 3rd 1813 under its new name of Manchester Township (currently Arlington). On December 6th 1814 Samuel Morse established a post office at NorthAdams after transmitting his first telegraph message from Chelmsfordport to West Springfield
