The company grew quickly and by 1900, it had outgrown its original home on Main Street in North Adams. Fenton decided to move his business to a larger location on Beacon Street in downtown NorthAdams. This new space was designed by architect Charles W. Bicknell and is still used today as the company’s main office. Fenton’s products were well-known and popular among consumers and government officials alike. His products featured high-quality glassware and lenses that were perfect for displaying information or looking at picturesque landscapes. His products were also reliable and would often last many years without needing to be replaced or serviced. During World War II, Fenton produced materials for the war effort including optics, lens caps, eyeglasses, sunglasses, goggles and other military-related items. After the war ended, he continued production until his death in 1955. He is buried in Mount Auburn Cemetery in Boston with his wife Augusta (née Emerson). The legacy of John Fenton continues to this day as one of the most successful manufacturers of optical accessories in history.

North Adams, Massachusetts is an incorporated town in Berkshire County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 7,878 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Boston metropolitan area. North Adams was first settled by English colonists in 1630 as a small community on the side of the hill called Northampton Hill. The town growth began with several mills built in the early 1800s and continued with development of agriculture, manufacturing, and light industry until after World War II when it became an enclave of commuter New England towns around Boston. It has since resumed its traditional agricultural economy and now employs over 100 people in agriculture, manufacturing, information technology and services. The name "North Adams" comes from Native American words meaning "hills near a water source." In 1630 two men named John Winthrop and Caleb Winslow founded what would become NorthAdams Mills on land that they had bought from the Massachusets tribe of Indians for £10 per acre (about $2 million today). At first only flour was produced but soon other products such as cheese and soap were developed as well. In 1825 a group of men led by Elijah Parish collected money to build a school which became one of the largest public schools in New England. In 1834 NorthAdams voted to become an incorporated town under state law. The town grew rapidly during this time with many new homes being built along Route 128 including many grander examples such as Sugar House which still stands today (see photo). During World War II NorthAdams experienced significant growth due to its role as one of three housing regions for workers at The Boeing Company located at Framingham Airport outside Boston. The first European to visit NorthAdams was Giovanni da Verrazzano on October 14th 1524, during his failed attempt to find a route to India through what is now New Jersey. He named the area "Nova Hampshire" after Moncton, Nova Scotia which he had just crossed into Canada from France. In 1636, Sir John Winthrop built his first house in NorthAdams as part of his colonization scheme for new English settlements in America. Winthrop's house still stands today and is used as an office building by the town government. In 1785, when Connecticut became a state and North Adams became part of it, it remained an incorporated village with its own board of selectmen until 1838 when it became a town under charter granted by Governor Andrew Johnson.. By 1852 there were over 1,000 people living in NorthAdams with 300 businesses including two sawmills and five tanneries! The population reached 10,000 by 1900; however this number diminished due to move-outs afterWorld War II (WWII relocation policies). More recently many heavy industry jobs have been lost due to competition from China however some light industrial jobs remain such as food processing or furniture making.. The population has slowly recovered but continues to decline (-10% since 2000) as more people leave for other parts of Massachusetts or Rhode Island because of high cost of living or lack thereof
