North Adams (commonly spelled North Adams) is a town in Berkshire County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 13,865 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Boston metropolitan area. The village of North Adams was annexed by North Adams in 1853. The first permanent settler in what would become North Adams was John Smith who arrived in 1793 from Rhode Island and named his settlement "Newbury". He and his family were the only white settlers for some time after other Englishmen had moved into the area during the years before Confederation. In 1800 Samuel Fitch built a gristmill on the Charles River and began to produce flour for local consumption. By 1810 there were three mills in town, all producing flour which was sold throughout New England and beyond. In 1830 George Peabody established an iron works near where he now lives on Route 128 within walking distance of both Hotchkiss Avenue and Market Street. This soon became one of largest ironworks in America with over 1 million tons produced between 1830-1860 alone! Although this industry slowed down during the Great Depression it didn't stop entirely as several large companies such as Bethlehem Steel Corporation bought out many smaller producers including Peabody Iron Works (now Ferrous Industries Inc.) In 1950s two small towns – Amherst and Bedford – merged to form Northampton County when they voted overwhelmingly to secede from Massachusetts due to statewide budget problems caused by Rapid City's annexation into South Dakota following World War II . After more than 50 years of growth, starting with a population of 3,000 in 1920, North Adams reached its present size with 14,000 residents when it fully amalgamated with Amherst on January 1st 1989 having long argued for separation! A variety of unique businesses have sprung up around North Adams over the years including handmade jewelry store Beryl'setsy & Co., ice cream parlors Wanderer's Creamery/Crispy Donuts & Coffee House, antique dealership Antiques Unlimited/, post office (established 1825), retirement home Carefree Manor (), fabric store Chatham Fabrication (), pet supplies supplier Purebred Joe's (), health food store Third World Health () along with numerous restaurants including Painted Pig(), Fisherman’s Wharf Diner (), Primitive Home Cooking (). Today much of this activity takes place outside on open spaces or inside buildings such as art galleries (such as Moon Landing Gallery), breweries (including Brewster’s Brewery ), wine stores (Savage Wines ), dance studios (& ), agricultural supply stores (). Although most businesses are no longer active they continue to serve their community by hosting events inappropriate for most other places such as monthly meets at Artistic Pizza Place or 2nd Annual craft beer festival at Shelburne Farms ).
In 1692, the town of North Adams was first settled in what is now Quincy. The town was named for George Washington's plantation in Virginia. A year later, the town voted to become a part of Massachusetts.
