North Adams is part of the Boston metropolitan area and is one of the most densely populated villages in New England. It is also one of the oldest towns in Massachusetts. The town was first settled by Puritans in 1638. In 1753 it became a part of Hampshire County and then Berkshire County. The first post office was established in North Adams on December 8, 1753, and remained open until 1837. In 1812 an act setting off a line from Springfield to Pittsfield meant that North Adams had become an unincorporated village. On July 6, 1824, this Village joined with other villages located near Pittsfield to create what became Berkshire County as a result of an act passed by the legislature entitled "An Act for Boundaries between several Townships within this Commonwealth". After years of growth and development due to its location on Route 1A (the old highway), NorthAdams saw its first commercial development when Goudreau's Creamery opened up in 1922 at 95 John Fitch Road/Route 1A & Main Street. Goudreau's would later be bought out by Kraft Foods who moved their corporate headquarters to Framingham in 1987-1988). In recent decades much progress has been made to revitalize NorthAdams which has seen new businesses come online such as Bake'em Up! Coffee House & Bakery (2013) and Herrington's Ice Cream Parlor (2015).
