The town's economy depended on agriculture, which produced corn, wheat, cattle, sheep, pigs, and other goods for export. The townsfolk also developed an industry around making paper products such as hats and shrouds. By 1825 North Adams had become one of the leading textile towns in Massachusetts. During the 19th century many changes occurred in North Adams including the construction of the Erie Canal which connected New York City with Boston via North Adams. This caused a rapid growth of commerce in the town which led to increased development of new neighborhoods such as Quincy Heights and Arlington Heights.
