The first Europeans to visit what is now North Adams were English fishermen who went ashore along the coast of Cape Cod in 1624. They named their settlement afterSir Nicholas Northamptonshire (1592–1660), 1st Baronet of Grantham. Sir Nicholas had been one of two commissioners appointed by King James I to survey and map the American mainland for England's new colony in 1626. He delivered his report on July 30, 1627, which recommended that Ipswich be chosen as the site for America's first capital city. In 1630 Governor John Winthrop sent Nathaniel Eaton with 5 colonists from Rhode Island to explore what would become North Adams; they arrived on November 10 and founded a small village called Nahant along modern Route 20 near present-day Nahant Beach). In 1635 Captain Richard Gridley explored what would become North Adams; he found it unsuitable for agriculture but did make contact with Native Americans hereabouts and naming some local hills "Grantham Hill" after him (present-day Hillsborough) may have been motivated by this encounter. By 1638 there were about 50 people living in Nahant Village; they built wattle and daub houses using red earth taken from nearby cliffshhvoorhees National Monument/Area: N/A
